Best Tubing Mascara for Lashes that Can’t Hold a Curl: Seriously, I made a chart

I’ve been testing tubing mascaras because my lashes love to look amazing for five minutes and then fall flat for the rest of the day. It makes a big difference for how awake I look if my mascara is doing its job, so I decided to finally try and find the right mascara for me. I’ve always heard the Thrive Liquid Lash Extensions is the best tubing mascara ever, except it weighs my lashes down so much that on me it barely looks like I did anything. Your lashes might be totally different.

So, I made a chart. One axis is how much a mascara weighs my lashes down (does it hold a curl or ruin it). The other axis is how bold it looks on the lashes vs how natural/wispy the effect is. I tried eleven popular tubing mascaras over the last few months to map them onto this chart, so if your lashes are like mine and you want that a bold look that stays all day, you’ll have a better idea of what might work. And if your lashes hold a curl easily or can handle a heavier mascara, you’ll probably like something in a different quadrant. Same if you want super lightweight and natural, there’s a quadrant for that too. All of these washed off with warm water super easily. They also did not smudge, no matter how much my toddler tried to get at my lashes. In this post, all links are affiliate links (thank you for your support!), but all opinions are my own.

Hourglass Unlocked Instant Extensions Mascara – This mascara adds length and definition and stays perfectly in place until you wash it off with warm water. The brush grabs every lash without clumping, and the formula feels super lightweight. I love that my lashes don’t fall quickly and stay curled much longer than with heavier mascara formulas. This honestly holds a curl the entire day without flaking or smudging and is just super reliable. It’s the one I always go back to, but I usually buy the mini because it’s expensive.

Finding Ferdinand LashLift Tubing Mascara – This tubing mascara was the first that I tried that was much lighter weight than the Thrive mascara. I love that my lashes don’t fall as quickly and keep a curl much longer than with the Thrive. It actually holds a curl longer than the rest of these mascaras except for the Hourglass and Heroine Make Long & Curl. This is one of the best options I’ve tried for getting a noticeable lash look without going too heavy, and I really like how my lashes seem to be doing after I use this consistently for a few months.

Kiss Me Heroine Make Long & Curl Mascara Advanced Film – This one holds a curl really, really well (as you can see in the chart, the best). It’s not as bold and volumizing as the Finding Ferdinand or Hourglass, but it’s super pretty and absolutely one of my top three. This is actually the one I’m using right now and have repurchased since doing this test. I think this mascara is really well suited for to thin, straight lashes that need a lot of help to stay curled all day, which is exactly the lashes I have.

Persona Volumizing Tubing Mascara – I really liked this one but not enough to make it into my top three. It gives more volume and length than a super natural tubing mascara, but it’s not incredibly dramatic. It’s easy to wear, doesn’t feel fussy, and it’s the kind of mascara that just works when I don’t want to think too hard. I’d absolutely use it again if I happened to get it somehow but it doesn’t beat out my favorites for me to repurchase it.

Em Shapeshift Tubing Mascara – This one is not super bold, but it keeps my lashes looking lifted and defined all day without feeling heavy. It’s a good pick when I want something subtle but still want my lashes to stay up. In side by sides, it always looked like it had a bit more volume, length, and lift than the ones further down on the Y axis.

Urban Decay Tube Job – This looks very similar to Em in terms of how much mascara you see, but it feels a little heavier on me so my lashes don’t stay as lifted. It’s really nice, but side by side, Em looked better because it held a curl longer. I’m really happy I tried this one though because if I wanted a tubing mascara in an auburn or taupe, this is absolutely the one I’d grab. It works well enough, and it can be hard to find tubing mascaras in colors than black or brown.

Essence Lash Without Limits Tubing Extreme Lengthening & Volume Mascara – This is my most lightweight, natural option. It gives super light separated lashes that are more “my lashes but better” than anything else. If you want an everyday tubing mascara that’s comfortable and $5, this is great. I’ve actually been using it as a second coat on top of other mascaras to add a little extra boldness without adding a lot of weight, and that’s been working really well. Especially with the middle mascaras (Persona, Em, Urban Decay, Soshe, Caliray), a coat of this makes my lashes look much more thick and volumized without weighing down the curl at all. So, I’ll definitely be repurchasing this in a few months.

SOSHE Waterproof Tubing Mascara – This one leans pretty natural on me, but it also has a little more weight than I want for a “natural” mascara. It defines and adds some length, but my lashes don’t stay as lifted as they do with my favorites. I’ll use it when I want a softer look and I’m not prioritizing curl, but if I’m doing no makeup makeup, I’d still rather reach for Essence because it’s lighter and keeps my lashes up better. *Pictured is the refill, which you can actually buy on its own and use just fine if you do that by accident.

Caliray Come Hell or High Water 24-hour Volumizing & Lengthening Tubing Mascara – This one is way more natural than Em on me, and my lashes definitely fall more than with my favorites. I’m really glad I tried it, but it’s not becoming a staple. I’ll reach for it on super no makeup makeup days, but long term, if I’m going for that look I’d rather just use the Essence or the Urban Decay if I’m looking for a brown.

Thrive Liquid Lash Extensions Tubing Mascara – This is maximum impact, and it builds fast. On me, the tradeoff is that it is so stiff and heavy, and my lashes fall so much faster compared to the lighter tubing formulas. If you want thick, dramatic lashes, this one definitely delivers, but it’s not my top pick when I’m prioritizing a lifted, curled look, which is almost always. That said, if you’re looking for a blue, berry brown, or grey, they do have those options, and it might be worth the trade off.

Tarte Tartelette Tubing – This one was way too natural on me for how little it held a curl. It basically did nothing on my lashes, and it’s the only one in this group that I just don’t recommend at all. If you want a truly natural look, Essence does it better, and if you want lift and curl hold, pretty much anything else here is a better use of your money.

Setting Spray Showdown Round 2: One/Size, MAC, Milk, Danessa Myricks, Milani, and Hourglass

Welcome back to the Setting Spray showdown! This is the second full round in my setting spray showdown series, where I’m testing popular formulas side by side to see what actually makes a difference in real life. I’ll be doing the same makeup, with the same lighting, for at least 16 hours for each test. I’ve also been testing all of these setting sprays for months before doing these elimination rounds. For this round, I did all of the matches in this post since I’ve already talked about each spray at length in previous posts. In this post, all links are affiliate links (thank you for your support!), but all opinions are my own.

Round 2, Match 1: One/Size On ’Til Dawn Mattifying vs MAC Fix+ Stay Over – This one was honestly frustrating to kick off this round with because these are two of my favorite setting sprays, and I’d genuinely recommend either depending on what you want. If you’re looking for a more matte, smoothed, blurred finish and maximum hold for your makeup, One/Size absolutely delivers. It mattifies, blurs, and keeps everything in place all day. But the MAC Fix+ Stay Over surprised me by keeping my makeup staying looking good just as well as the One/Size while also having a better skin finish. It managed to smooth and blur while still maintaining a hydrated, skin like, slightly dewy finish, and my makeup still stayed together all day. I was really impressed that it held its own against the One/Size while also making my skin look hydrated and natural, so MAC is moving on. Note that I have dry skin and it’s the winter, so if you have combo or oily skin, you might really like One/Size.

Round 2, Match 2: Milk Makeup Hydro Grip vs Danessa Myricks Blurring Balm Spray – I want to be fair to Milk because on its own or compared to plenty of other sprays, it really does work well, but head to head, Danessa Myricks made it obvious which of these two was moving on. The Milk side looked good at the start, but it looked way more textured as the day went on and the makeup seemed to fall apart faster. By end of day, it looked a more broken up on that side, almost like I hadn’t used a setting spray at all relative to the other side. The Danessa Myricks side, meanwhile, stayed noticeably smoother, blurred, and put together all day long. Everything stayed melded and cohesive instead of separating and getting textured. Way more easily than I expected, Danessa Myricks is moving on.

Round 2, Match 3: One/Size Powder Melt vs Milani Make It Last Dewy – This was another round where I really struggled to pick a winner. Right after spraying, Milani Make It Last Dewy looked more natural, while One/Size Powder Melt looked noticeably glassier and glowier. Both melted my powders together nicely, but the Milani felt like it slightly thinned the makeup, while One/Size kept everything more intact at the start. By my 6:30 p.m. check in though, most people I sent photos to actually preferred the Milani side because it looked smoother, even though the One/Size side held the makeup a little better. By the end of the day, both sides honestly still looked great and I’m not sure you’d really be able to tell the difference. So, I’m giving this round to Milani for that tiny bit of a smoother, less textured, more natural finish overall, and the huge price difference between them. The One/Size is still one of my favorites, and I will absolutely be finishing this bottle, but I feel confident recommending the Milani for a dewy, melt your makeup together spray.

Bye round: Hourglass Veil Soft Focus moves on. Because of the number of sprays in this showdown, one of them had to get a bye round this time, and Hourglass Veil Soft Focus is the one moving on automatically based on how the bracket shook out. I don’t mind at all, because it was one of my favorites from Round 1, and I’m excited to see how it stacks up against the Milani Make It Last Dewy.

Who’s moving on from this round: MAC Fix+ Stay Over, Danessa Myricks Blurring Balm Spray, Milani Make It Last Dewy, and Hourglass Veil Soft Focus.

I Shopped My Stash and Found 5 Products I Love But had Totally Forgotten About

As part of my no-buy year, I’m trying to really get to know and love my collection, and part of that is diving back into my collection to re-fall in love with products I already have (or realize they don’t work for me). These are 5 products that I recently dug back out and realized how much I love them, and I’m so excited to be getting more use out of them! And, of course, thank you so much for being here, and it would mean so much to me if you subscribe here or on Instagram @liftbakelove for new posts.

Armani Beauty Luminous Silk Foundation in Shade 4 – This is what inspired this post. I started wearing this again (honestly because I’ve had it for years and want to finish it before it expires), and I was reminded about how amazing it makes my skin look. It has exactly the the right amount of coverage (light to medium and buildable), looks glowy but not oily, and lasts all day. I was actually shocked that it lasted over 14 hours and looked exactly the same as when I applied it. I had to really build up this swatch because a light layer blended seamlessly into my skin, but as you can see, it’s definitely buildable. I’m so glad I pulled this back out!

Natasha Denona Puff Paint Liquid Blush – This is a liquid blush serum that dries down but keep its beautiful sheen – you can see how dewy it looks on my swatch above. I love using it as a finishing touch after I apply other cream blushes to add some brightness and shimmer-free shine. It never disturbs anything underneath it and is just the right amount of pigmentation to use in this way. I have it in the shade Darya, which is a bright melon color that is really unique to my collection, and I never think to reach for. But using it again – wow, I love how much it brightens up my face and how easy it is to use.

W3ll People Superpowder Brightening Powder – This was my go-to before I got the Kosas Cloud Set powder, and I started using it again just to switch it up. I love it just as much as I did before! I like to use this powder as a last step before my setting spray to clean up and brighten any areas that might need it. It’s super useful as a way to correct going too far with blush or bronzer without adding coverage or mattifying your skin. It’s been really nice to use even in conjunction with other powders because I can use this to brighten vs just set.

Vesca Lush Glow Creamy Lip Oil in Ginger Lily – I honestly completely forgot I owned this because I just have so many lip balms and oils right now. I started using it again recently, and I was reminded about how amazing it is. The formula is like the perfect combo of a lip balm, lip oil, and lip gloss. It’s super moisturizing, stays glossy for so much longer than I would have expected, and the color is just the right level of sheerness for me. I’ve found this so easy to apply throughout the day, and the color works so well with so many blush and eyeshadow combinations!

Holo Taco Glitter Polishes – This is more of a category, but I had totally forgotten about how much I love this polish formula. I used them for this tropical flower nail art and was so happy with how it turned out. Especially in the sun, the glitter formula is so sparkly and holo. I do have to do 3 coats for full coverage, but that’s very expected for glitter/jelly shades. I tend to use these glitters in the winter because they remind me of holiday time, but I will definitely need to keep using the lighter shades like Play Rose, Menchie the Cat, and Gliterally Purple more often in the spring and summer!
